No photo availableMary Bass was born July 10, 1935, in Detroit, Mich. She received a B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1954 and a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1957.

From 1957 to 1959, Bass was an attorney with the legal aid department of the Jewish Family and Community Service in Chicago. From 1966 to 1968, she was with the opinions and legislation division of the New York City Law Department. From 1969 to 1970, she was executive assistant to the director of the Office of Collective Bargaining.

From 1970 to 1972, Bass was with the appeals division of the Law Department, and from 1972 to 1973, she was head of the education section of the general litigation division.

In 1973 she was assistant-in-charge of the family court division. Since 1973 Bass has been general counsel and vice chancellor for legal affairs for the New York City Board of Higher Education. In this capacity, she is the chief legal officer of the board and of City University of New York.
