Class Times and Location

All classes will be held in the Spring Valley Building on the American University campus in Washington, DC. All classes are scheduled from 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m.

Course Description

New for FY 2015, the Emerging Leader Program (EmL) is another way for CIGIE to extend the shared Inspector General mission, culture, and identity across the Federal government by providing early opportunities for the professional development of future leaders within Offices of Inspector General. Emerging leaders are identified by their organizations as rising stars with potential to become future IG leaders. This four-day program serves as the first step toward that goal through introduction to the IG leadership community and an initial exploration of basic leadership tools. This is achieved in an exciting four-day leadership development program that promotes interaction between students from various IG disciplines and OIGs, and inspires the participants to make greater contributions and pursue greater responsibilities within their respective organizations. After the program is over, students will have the opportunity to continue their professional development through active engagement with all graduates of CIGIE leadership training programs through CIGIE’s Leadership Community of Practice. These classes are conducted at American University in Washington, DC. Tuition is $1,000 per student, with CIGIE covering the remainder of the cost (which is another $1,000 per student).

 

Target Audience

Offered in conjunction with American University in the four-day, EmL is designed for staff members who are generally new to the Federal workforce or new to the IG community, and show real potential for growing into our leaders of tomorrow. Participants should generally have less than 3-years of experience in the IG community and/or be at the GS-10 to 13 (or equivalent) level. They should have little or no supervisory experience, but show a willingness to lead and be the type of role model that others tend to follow. They will have demonstrated persistence and skill in turning routine setbacks into opportunities for growth. Students can be from any OIG discipline—auditors, investigators, inspectors, or mission support—and should be interested in preparing to assume a leadership role in the future.

 

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training program, students will be able to:

  • Compare, contrast, and apply different conceptual leadership frameworks including authentic leadership, shared leadership, and the follower-perspective on leadership.
  • Understand and demonstrate the critical skill of self-assessment and reflection.
  • Understand the role that followers play in organizational culture.
  • Build emotional and social intelligence with a focus on understanding the interpersonal aspects of leadership.
  • Assess personal styles of leadership and how they may be strengthened.
  • Understand personality preferences and their impact on communication and relationship management.
